DESCRIPTION:NO TO TORTURE AND OCCUPATION, YES TO INTERNATIONAL LAW! In Honor of the
UN's International Day in Support of Victims of Torture: PROTEST UC
BERKELEY LAW PROFESSOR JOHN YOO Friday, June 25, 5 PM Meet at Berkeley
BART station, march to Boalt Hall School of Law We’ve all seen the
offensive photos of torture and abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and have
heard that conditions at the Guantanamo Bay detention camps may be even
worse. But did you know that the principal legal architect of Bush
administration argument that detainees are not protected by international
law lives in our very own backyard? UC Berkeley Law Professor John Yoo,
while working for the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel,
authored an infamous January 2002 memo in which he argued that terrorism
suspects are not covered by the War Crimes Act or the Geneva Conventions.
Yoo’s arguments provide legal cover for the use of torture against
detainees, and conclude that U.S. soldiers can’t be tried for war crimes.
Yoo was also central to authoring the USA PATRIOT Act! On the eve of the
UN’s International day in Support of Victims of Torture, let’s tell
John Yoo and the world what we think about torture – in Guantanamo Bay,
Afghanistan, Iraq and everywhere! We’ll march from the Berkeley BART
station to the Boalt Hall School of Law. Then, those who like will march
to the Landmark California Theater to hand out flyers at the Fahrenheit 911
opening. Bring enlarged photos of the Abu Ghraib torture incident or dress
as one of the torture victims. Sponsored by Amnesty International,
CODEPINK, Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Global Exchange, Middle East
Children’s Alliance, National Lawyers Guild, Not In Our Name Bay Area,
United for Peace and Justice Bay Area, and others. For more information,
