DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 18th, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm 2004 Bay Area NGO-Media Dialogue:
Bringing Home ‘Bad News’: Increasing Awareness in the US of Conflict,
Violence and Disaster Abroad New College Theater, 777 Valencia St., San
Francisco Panelists include: David Michaelis, Director of Current

Francisco Chronicle Fairuz Taqi-Eddin, Media and Event Coordinator, CARE

Perlstein, Executive Director, Media Alliance (Moderator) This dialogue
features a panel of NGO staff and Bay Area journalists as they discuss
international crises and the range of their coverage and awareness in the
US. Why do some foreign stories of crises get covered while others seem to
be overlooked in the US? How can NGO and media professionals accurately
convey at home common hazards experienced abroad? How can they succeed in
their international work while protecting themselves in politically
sensitive or violent environments? These are only a sample of topics that
may be discussed, and the audience is invited to ask questions afterward.
