DESCRIPTION:UNPRECENDENTED: THE 2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION Screening Thursday, May
6th, 8pm at Artists' Television Access in San Francisco Screening is a
benefit to send the Whispered Media Collective to the Republican National
Convention Protest "will hold you in a state of appalled enthrallment"
-New Yorker Magazine "illuminating and persuasive" -Los Angeles Times On
November 7th, 2000 one hundred million Americans went to the polls to vote
for the 43rd President of the United States. That evening a startling
picture emerged. The presidency would be determined by one state, Florida,
where the election was marred by suspicious irregularities and voter purges
that targeted African Americans and Democrats. George Bush was ahead of Al
Gore by a mere 1700 votes, this lead precipitated an unprecedented 36-day
crisis. Whispered Media is proud to present UNPRECEDENTED: THE 2000
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION by Joan Sekler and Richard Ray Perez, the riveting
story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida and the undermining of
democracy in America. Focusing on events leading up to election day and
the attempt to count legally cast votes in the days that followed,
UNPRECEDENTED examines a suspicious pattern of irregularities, injustices
and voter purges-all in a state governed by the winning candidate's
brother. The film screens Thursday, May 6th at 8pm at Artists' Television
Access in San Francisco. From how thousands of African Americans showed up
to the polls discovering their names were missing from the voting rolls and
the infamous "butterfly ballot" that caused many voters confusion,
UNPRECEDENTED is a cautionary tale that warns us that we must insist our
elections be conducted in a manner above reproach, that all legitimate
voters may exercise their franchise, and all legal votes must be counted.
This movie has been called "a powerful piece of agitprop filmmaking"
(Variety) which won the New York International Film Festival's Grand Jury
Prize for Best Documentary and Director's Award and the Audience Award for
Best Documentary from San Francisco Independent Film Festival. Screening
before UNPRECEDENTED is the 5-minute trailer to Jennifer Gilomen and
Jessica Dorfan's new video "Art as Revolution", which explores the beauty
resulting from the rare combination of artist and activist in individuals
who have both talent in their art and a strong message in their content.
Admission is $5-$20 sliding scale with proceeds benefiting sending the
Whispered Media Collective to the Republican National Convention protestin
