DESCRIPTION:Friday, May 21st - 7pm (doors at 6:30) Screening of the award winning
film: The Gatekeeper Through the Gatekeeper, "John Carlos Frey puts a
human face on the struggle of undocumented workers crossing the Mexico-U.S.
border. The Gatekeeper follows self-loathing biracial Border Patrol agent
Adam Fields (Frey), who's stuck undercover as an illegal immigrant and must
endure the violent and inhumane conditions of a work camp run by a drug
cartel in central California. The film does well to show how the
"invisibility" of undocumented workers creates abusive, slave-like
conditions - a situation that clearly benefits the criminal industry.
Complicated by Fields's internalized racism, the film's story offers an
interesting look at how far people will go for the American dream, and how
it can backfire on them." -Cindy Emch, SF Bay Guardian For more
information on the film go to: http://www.gatekeeperfilm.com/ A benefit
for the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride Last September, 883 Immigrant
Worker Freedom Riders from 54 countries crossed 42 states and stopped at
over 200 public events in a national campaign, following in the footsteps
of the 1960's civil rights movement, to demand equal rights for immigrants.
The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride was the largest mobilization in U.S.
history in support of immigrants rights. >From every major city in the
U.S. we came together to demand that this nation's broken immigration
system be fixed, and that immigrants and their families be accorded equal
civil liberties and workplace protections. Come hear from some of the
Northern California Riders about how we are continuing this movement, and
help us raise funds to send Riders to participate in the New Freedom Summer
program which will continue to raise the political power and visibility of
immigrant communities. Come watch this film that helps to expose both the
reality of immigrant's lives in California as well as the inhumane
immigration and border enforcement policies that result in hundreds of
deaths along the border every year. For more information on the Immigrant
Worker Freedom Ride, please call Martha at 510-682-4302 or visit
http://www.iwfr.org $8-20 sliding scale donation for the Immigrant Workers
