Join us Thursday, March 25 from 6 to 7 pm while Joann Levy discusses her new book, Unsettling the West: Eliza Farnham and Georgiana Kirby in Frontier California. Eliza Farnham, author of California In-doors and Out, is best remembered for her endeavor to bring gentility--in the form of intelligent, virtuous, unmarried women--to the bachelor miners of early California via a ship laden with adventuresome women pioneers. That a newly widowed woman embarked on such a voyage of her own volition was truly remarkable for the time. A celebrated female pioneer, Eliza Farnham later devoted herself to writing and prison reform. Georgiana Bruce, invited by Farnham to travel to California, arrived in Santa Cruz in 1850, married, and took up the causes of temperance and women's suffrage. Ms. Levy will be available to sign copies of Unsettling the West after the discussion. The evening will begin with a reception at 5:30 with the lecture from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Seating is limited, RSVP recommended.
