DESCRIPTION:FREE KEVIN COOPER STOP THE EXECUTIONS Coalition organizing
meeting Monday, March 1 @ 6:30pm AFSC Office 65 Ninth Street in SF at
the corner of Mission (near Civic Center BART) ALL WELCOME!!! The Free
Kevin Cooper Committee For a California Moratorium wishes to thank you all
for all the hard work to help save Kevin Cooper's life. As you know on
the day Kevin was scheduled to be executed, February 10, the Ninth District
Court granted a stay and the US Supreme Court upheld a stay of execution
pending further testing and testimony. IT IS A TREMENDOUS VICTORY. WE MUST
CONTINUE THE EFFORTS because Kevin is still on death row. We need your
help to get Kevin a new trial and win a moratorium on executions in
California as a step towards abolishing the death penalty. On Saturday,
NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown spoke at a Kevin Cooper Committee sponsored
event in Richmond calling for a moratorium on executions in California
after meeting with death row inmate Stan “Tookie” Williams. Barbara
Lee has also announced her support for a moratorium and the California
State Legislature is considering commissioning a study of the bias in
California’s death system. This would lay the legal basis for a halt to
executions. Please check http://www.savekevincooper.org for updates.
Bill Lockyear, the state attorney general, is stubbornly trying to appeal
again to execute Kevin Cooper as rapidly as possible. The testing of
tampering is just one small piece of the prosecution's weak case. WE MUST
DEMAND THAT BILL LOCKYEAR DEMAND A NEW TRIAL. In the meeting we will
explore effective ways to leverage our efforts. Upcoming Events: *Stan
“Tookie” Williams new movie, Redemption, to be aired on Fox on Easter
Sunday April 11th. Stan is on death row in San Quentin and was recently
nominated for a Nobel Peace prize for his anti-violence children’s
books. We plan to organize screenings of this movie across the state. It
was recently premiered to enthusiastic reviews at the Sundance Film
Festival. *Peace March in San Francisco on March 20th *Mumia Rally
April 24th in San Francisco PLEASE COME ON MONDAY, MARCH 1st, TO OUR
MEETING AND PLEASE RSVP BY RETURNING THIS EMAIL OR SENDING AN EMAIL TO
