 objectors (COs) who refused to fight in World War II. \nAs noncombatant 
 medics under fire, medical guinea pigs, fire fighters,\nattendants in 
 mental institutions and workers in Civilian Public Service\ncamps, 37,000 
 COs performed alternative service during the war.  Seven\nthousand war 
 resisters spent those years in prison and used hunger\nstrikes to racially 
 integrate the federal prison system.  Their\nexperiences prepared a 
 generation of nonviolent activists to change\nAmerican society in ways that
