DESCRIPTION:E D U C A T I O N I S A R I G H T, N O T A P R I V I L E G E ! Feb 20,
2004 from 12-2pm Ceasar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose (at San Carlos
and Market St) We know the education cuts, fee increases, lay-offs and
class cancelations have been hurting us and the folks we know. It makes us
wonder if we will get the classes we need to graduate, if our finacial aid
will get cut, if we can afford the tuition and whether we will get into the
school we want to transfer to? But now, us the students, are going to
make our voice heard on this. We are going to be saying to Arnold and the
politicians in Sacramento: "Education is a Right, Not a Privilege! Don't
Balance the Budget on Our Backs!" So whether you are a community college
student, high school, CSU or UC student, or a parent we are asking you to
join us for a local rally demanding accessible and affordable higher
education for all! We know these cuts and fee increases are going to hit
low-income and working students, students of color, first generation and
disabled students first, and we are not going to accept this! Take a
Stand for Education and Get the Facts: -175,000 student were kept out of
community colleges due to last years budget cuts and fee increases, this is
greater than the entire total enrollment of all UC colleges! -In the LA
Community College District alone there are 3 times the number of Black
students and 2 times the number of Latino students as are enrolled in the
entire UC system! -The Governor Arnold wants to lower the income
eligibility for financial aid by 10% and freeze the award levels at CSU and
UC levels. -UC and CSU graduate students are facing a 40% increase and
10% for undergraduates. Community college fees would have been raised over
110% in two years to $24 per semester unit and $50 per semester unit for
those with bachelors degrees. -Governor Arnold has proposed has 10%
reduction in UC and CSU freshman enrollments next year. If these students
went to community college they would have priority registration, displacing
already enrolled students. Rally includes speakers and entertainment.
We are building towards the state-wide march in Sacramento on March 15!
