DESCRIPTION:Silent Genocide: America's Use of Radioactive Weaponry in the Age of
Terror\n- A Crime Against the Planet -\n\nCoalition forces have dropped
thousands of tons of radioactive weaponry in Afghanistan and Iraq in
willful disregard for the health of the inhabitants of those countries, and
for the health of their own troops. Evidence has been found not only of
depleted uranium (Uranium 238), but also nondepleted uranium (Uranium 235),
and plutonium. Exposure to these highly radioactive isotopes results in
chronic and fatal illnesses, long-term disabilities, and genetic birth
defects.\n\nYou are invited to hear new information and discussion from a
panel of scientists, health professionals, and activists on radiological
poisoning and its long-term health consequences on the people and
environment of Afghanistan and Iraq. Public input is welcome in a forum
after the panel.\n\nPANELISTS: Dr. Khalil Rahmany, clinical psychologist
and adjunct professor of psychology at Chabot College, and founding
president of the Afghan Psychological Association of America, will address
the trauma of war and the ongoing suffering of the Afghan people. Patricia
Axelrod, weapons specialist with a ten-year history of writing and
research, recipient of a MacArthur Foundation grant, and advocate for U.S.
veterans suffering from Gulf War syndrome, will speak about the long-term
health effects of radiological poisoning. Leuren Moret, an independent
scientist and activist who works with communities around the world on
radiation and public health issues, will report on the World Uranium
Weapons Conference held in October in Hamburg, Germany. David Seaborg,
evolutionary biologist who does scientific research on evolutionary theory,
will discuss the consequences of nuclear weapons and possible
 solutions.\n\nWHEN: Thursday, December 4, 2003 at 7 p.m.\n\nWHERE: Berkeley
Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists (1924 Cedar Street at
 Bonita)\n\nCONTACT: Ingrid Kepler-May (510) 526-2900 or Diana Colvin (510)
232-3463 for more information.\n\nSuggested donation of $5 (none turned
away for lack of funds). Wheelchair accessible. Sponsored by BFUU Social
 Justice Committee.\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2004/02/03/27683.php
