 community\norganizations will hold a news conference and\ndemonstration
outside the Immigration and\nNaturalization Service (INS) offices in San
Francisco\non Friday, June 13. Following reports that 13,000 of\nthe Arab
and Muslim men who voluntarily registered\nwith the INS as part of the
government’s controversial\nSpecial Registration Program (NSEERS) will
face\ndeportation, the groups are calling on the INS to halt\nthe
expulsions of men from a list of mainly Arab and\nMuslim nations. The
groups say that the proposed\ndeportations constitute racial profiling and
will not\naid the fight against terrorism.\n\nOnly a handful of the 82,000
men over the age of 16\nwho complied with government orders to register
with\ntheir local INS office have been linked to terrorism.\nYet government
officials say that more than 13,000, or\n16 percent, are living in this
country illegally and\nwill face deportation. Thousands of
law-abiding\nindividuals, many of whom are awaiting permanent\nresident
status due to INS processing or delays, will\nunjustly face deportation,
according to civil rights\nand community leaders. \n\nThe deportations are
part of a systematic erosion of\nimmigrants’ rights since the terrorist
 attacks of\nSeptember 11, 2001, the groups say. A recent report by\nthe
Inspector General of the U.S. Department of\nJustice found that the Bush
 Administration’s round-up\nof non-citizens immediately after Sept. 11 was
plagued\nwith problems, forcing many people with no connection\nto
terrorism to languish behind bars in unduly harsh\nconditions. Officials
made "made little attempt\ndistinguish" between individuals with possible
ties to\nterrorism and those with visa infractions who
were\n"coincidentally" swept up, the report said. Despite\nthese findings,
on Thursday, May 27, Attorney General\nJohn Ashcroft urged Congress to
expand an anti-terror\nlaw to permit the U.S. government to hold
 more\nsuspects indefinitely. \n\nSponsored by\nAmnesty International,
