DESCRIPTION:Wednesday, 12/12 \n\nAdventures of a Radical Hillbilly\nIn 1932, Myles
Horton - at the age of 27 - founded Highlander Folk School in Monteagle,
Tennessee. He believed that if everyday people could come together to
discuss problems and share their experiences they could solve their
problems. He strongly believed in peer education, in\npeople becoming their
own experts, doing their own research, testing their ideas by taking
action, analyzing their actions, and learning from their
experiences.\nHorton began his educational work among his neighbors in
Grundy County, Tennessee, with farmers, miners, woodcutters, and mill
hands--those who are bypassed by ordinary educational institutions.
Highlander was committed to education for social change and to workers'
rights to\norganize. \nLater, Horton focused Highlander's resources and
programs on school desegregation, voter education, citizenship schools, and
the civil rights movement. When the Great Society's War on Poverty came to
Appalachia, he had relocated Highlander there under a new name\n(Highlander
Research and Education Center) and was already at work among the
disenfranchised people in the poorest region of the country.\n1982. 60
minutes. Video.\n\nThe Barefoot College\nThe Barefoot College of
Rajasthsan, India, trains "barefoot" teachers, doctors, solar engineers,
hand pump mechanics and others. The non-formal educational process
benefits the poorest of the poor who have no alternatives. It's successes
in revitalizing communities and teaching by demonstration have been carried
to 13 other Indian states, and have raised questions in Western countries
about our own educational process in our search for sustainability. The
College, spread over a 60,000 square feet area consisting of residences, a
library, dining room, meeting halls, marketing outlets, an open air
theatre, solar fabrication workshop, water testing laboratory, an
audio-visual unit, handicraft production center, a puppet workshop and
theatre, a blacksmith's workshop and a 400,000 liter rain water harvesting
tank, was entirely built and supervised by local people. \n\nNew College
 Theater, 777 Valencia Street.\n8:00 pm. A $3-5 donation is
requested.\n\nfor a complete list of New College events,
