DESCRIPTION:Red State Policies: How Abortion Care Restrictions Impact Maternal Health &
 Mortality \n\nWhen: Thu, June 9, 2022 @ 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM PDT\n\nWhere:
 Online event \n\nRegister Here:

is an important part of maternal health and how people care for and sustain
their families. States with more abortion restrictions have a higher
maternal mortality rate. For example, Arizona makes a huge effort to
restrict abortion, but does not put the same effort towards sustaining
families.\n\nJoin us for a panel discussion exploring how red state
policies impact maternal health, with panelists specifically examining
Arizona in this webinar.\n\nDesert Star Institute for Family Planning
 (https://desertstarfp.org/) is a Black, woman-led organization, working
from the foundational principles of Reproductive Justice, with intentional
partnerships and programming that build community and center Black,
\nIndigenous people, and people of color.\n\n\nPANELISTS:\n\nDeShawn
Taylor, MD - Founder and President/CEO Desert Star Institute for Family

code.\n\n\nMichelle Ivette Ponce - Co-Director of Arizona Birthworkers of
Color (AZBOC)\n\nMichelle Ivette Ponce is a reproductive justice advocate,
community organizer, and arts management consultant in Arizona. Michelle
serves as the Co-Director of Arizona Birthworkers of Color (AZBOC), an
organization of Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) who support
and provide services to birthing families in Arizona, since 2016. AZBOC has
served in various reproductive rights coalitions in the state of Arizona
beginning in 2020. Michelle works collaboratively with other grassroots

several cats, and a Sulcata tortoise.\n\n\nModerator: Athena Salman - LD26
State Representative\n\nRepresentative Salman is a mother who welcomed her
first child this year. Rep. Salman was born and raised in Arizona to a
first generation-American family from Mexico, Germany and Palestine. Rep.

enacted steep budget cuts to public education. Prior to being elected, she
