 since 1970, in conversation with Erin O’Toole, associate curator of 
 photography at SFMOMA.\n\nIntroduction by Sandra S. Phillips, Curator 
 Emeritus of Photography at SFMOMA.\n\nDevour the Land  is the catalog from 
 the eponymous exhibition at The Harvard Art Museums which was curated by 
 Dr. Best.\n\nDevour the Land explored the impacts of military activity on 
 the American landscape—and the ways in which photography supports 
 activism in response to these effects\n\n\n\n. Featuring approximately 160 
 photographs across 6 thematic groupings, the exhibition revealed the 
 nationwide footprint of the U.S. military, the wide network of industries 
 that support and supply its work, and the impacts of—and responses 
 to—this activity.\nMakeda Best is the Richard L. Menschel Curator of 
 Photography and Interim Division Head, Division of Modern and Contemporary 
 Art, at the Harvard Art Museums. She also teaches courses in photographic 
 history and theory at Harvard University. She holds an MFA from Cal Arts in 
 Studio Photography and a PhD from Harvard University. Her scholarly 
 interests focus on American photography, with a particular focus on 
 photojournalism, documentary, war photography, and text and image works. 
 Her forthcoming book, Where I am from is about ecology, histories of 
 photography, and the African American experience in San Francisco. \n
