DESCRIPTION:OPEN CLIMATE: MOVING TOWARD AN INDIGENOUS CLIMATE ECONOMY\n\nThis event is
in Spanish, with simultaneous translation into English\n\nDate and time:
 Tue, January 18, 2022 @ 8 AM – 9:30 AM PST (4 PM - 5:30 PM UK)\n\nRSVP:
 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-climate-toward-an-indigenous-climate-economy-tickets-219998119297\n\n\nSpeaker:
Tuntiak Katan, Coordinator of the Global Alliance of Territorial
Communities\n\nChair: Nicolas Salazar Sutil, Guardians Worldwide/Tenure
Facility\n\n\nCOP26 pledged $1.7 billion dollars to support Indigenous
communities, which set the agenda for this global climate summit. The
message from many Indigenous leaders is that money should not be the main
focus of climate action, and that forests cannot be mercantilised or
monetised. \n\nMonetary value is part of a more complex value system that
needs systemic change. Indigenous organisations require funding to continue
protecting forests and so as to mitigate climate change not because of
economic self-interest but in order to build capacity. Indigenous
organisations urgently need capacity-building so that these pledged funds
can be managed at the grassroots level, by local and Indigenous
groups.\n\nAt the heart of this move toward a different climate financing
architecture is a campaign for social and environmental justice. Tuntiak
Katak is one of the main figures of the global Indigenous campaign for
climate justice. \n\nIn this talk, Tuntiak Katak will explain Shandia Plan,
a model for climate financing that seeks to overcome the existing carbon
market model and greenwashing of existing climate funding agendas. Shandia
is a system for the financing of climate action that serves indigenous,
community and circular economies, prioritizing land rights and a holistic
 value system that serves life.\n
