DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nOn March 18, 1871,\nworkers in Paris rose up to stop an attempt by 
 the French army\nto steal cannons that had been purchased for the 
 city’s\ndefense in the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian war. The 
 French\ngovernment of Adolphe Thiers fled the city in panic, and 
 power\npassed into the hands of the armed working class. Elections\nwere 
 held on March 26 that created the Paris Commune, the first workers\nstate 
 in history.\n\n\nThe Commune was an\nentirely new form of state power that 
 set out to build a\nclassless society based on equality. But in the 
 infamous\nBloody Week of May 21-28, Thiers and the French army 
 stormed\nParis with heavy artillery—indiscriminately murdering 
 men,\nwomen and children suspected of having fought for,\nparticipated in 
 or sympathized with the Commune.\n\n\nAt enormous cost\nin blood, the 
 Commune lives on as a priceless experience for\nthe international working 
 class of today, whose lives, health,\nand living standards depend on their 
 struggle for state power\nin every country.\nThe speakers will\ninclude
