DESCRIPTION:This past Sunday Carl Nolte's Native Son article in the SF Chronicle
introduced the reader to the houseboat market moored in Mission Creek. His
writing described today's enviable setting, and then expressed the wonder
of what were once hippie housing projects in S**t Creek now million dollar
real estate offerings.\n\nTune in by ZOOM as I lead a real estate teach-in
from my kayak! You'll take a virtual tour from water level of Mission
Creek's floating neighborhood.\n\nThe point of the tour, however, is not to
merely ooh and ah. In fact, I'll introduce participants to evidence of the
divine, namely the mysterious economic emergence of locational rent. Nolte
wrote of million dollar houseboats, but who believes those houseboats if
towed to Fresno would fetch a million dollars?\n\n80% of that million
dollars resides in the location of those barges. Community!! The
efficiency, productivity, and high rent that comes with particular
locations is the effect of the presence of community! \n\nI propose that
the mystery of the divine is analogous to locational rent. We want proof of
community . . . we want proof of the divine. We think the proof is the
house (or the houseboat). The proof, actually, is what we don't see: all
the desire to be in location. It's that desire that leads to efficiency,
productivity, and high rent.\n\nThe upshot? We should no more privatize the
rent (of location) than we should privatize the divine.\n\nSo, tune in at
1:30 for the philosophy of economic rent, the mysterious materialization of
the divine . . . and the answer to your prayers.\n
