DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11/19 Press Conference-Defend The Bernard Zakheim UCSF Toland Hall
Murals On The History Of Medicine In California\n\nProtect The Murals &
Keep Them At UCSF\nWhat: Press Conference During UC Regents Meeting To
Call For The Proper Preservation of The UCSF Nathan Zakheim Murals & Their
Continued Public Display On The Campus\nUC Regents Will Be Meeting By
Remote During The Day\n\nWhere: UCSF Parnasus Campus UCSF Hospital 505
Parnassus Ave. San Francisco\nWhen: Thursday November 19, 2020 12:00 noon
PM\n\nUniversity of California Executives first told the people of San
Francisco and California that they did not have the funds to protect the
world famous Bernard Zakheim WPA UCSF Toland Hall murals on the history of
medicine in California.\n\nApparently these exeuctives including Senior
Associate Vice Chancellor of Real Estate/Vice President UCSF Health Brian
Newman were unaware of the historic importance of these murals and the
portrayal of fomer slave and midwife “Biddy” Mason who was an important
figure in the history of Blacks in California. \nShe was the first
recognized Black healthcare worker in California and is recognized in this
historic mural by WPA artist Nathan Zakheim.\n\nWhen students, faculty and
supporters of the murals in the public found out about the plan they
demanded that UCSF use it massive billion dollar endowment to protect the
mural and place it in the newly proposed building.\n\nThese same executives
then proposed to spend funds to protect the mural and chose a company that
has no experience with this type of mural preservation and there is no
agreement that they will be preserved and removed without any damage.
\n\nThey also have refused to guarantee that it will have an important
place at UCSF following the new construction project. Instead it may
disappear for decades in storage.\n\nThe drive by developers who apparently
control the agenda of UC is not only an issue at UCSF but at UCB where
University executives want to destroy People’s Park and also destroy
historic buildings in Berkeley. \n\nAre developer interests being put ahead
of protecting priceless art, parks and historic buildings?\n\nAt the press
conference, speakers will discuss the importance of properly protecting
the mural, why University executives would propose the destruction of such
a historic WPA art treasure and what supporters of the murals can do to
make sure they are protected, preserved and presented for the UCSF
students, faculty, staff and the people of California. Nothing less is will
be accepted.\n\nSpeakers,\nInitial Speakers:\nNathan Zakheim, Son Of The
