DESCRIPTION:HALF-EARTH DAY 2019: Pathways to a Half-Earth Future \n\nInspired by
renowned biologist and naturalist Edward O. Wilson, Half-Earth is a call to
conserve half the Earth’s land and sea in order to provide sufficient
habitat to safeguard the bulk of biodiversity, including
 ourselves.\n\nHALF-EARTH CONFERENCE\n\nDate and time: Monday, October 7,
 2019 @ 9 AM - 5 PM\n\nLocation: Clark Kerr Campus: Building 10 and
Conference Center, UC Berkeley, 2601 Warring St, Berkeley, CA
 94720\n\nCost: $10 - $45 (low student rates available)\ntickets:
 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/half-earth-day-tickets-63113919432\n\nHalf-Earth
Day brings together people from around the world and across disciplines to
share their unique perspectives and thought leadership on how we can work
together to achieve the goal of Half-Earth [conservation] and ensure the
health of our planet for future generations.\n\nJoin scientists,
conservationists, business leaders, community representatives, and
educators for an exciting day of programming at the University of
California, Berkeley. \n\nSPECIAL EVENING LECTURE: Half-Earth: How to Save
 the Natural World\n\nDate and time: Oct. 7 @ 7 PM - 9 PM\n\nLocation:
Zellerbach Auditorium, UC Berkeley, 101 Zellerbach Hall #4800, Berkeley, CA
 94720 \n\nTickets (student rate available):\n
 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/half-earth-day-tickets-63113919432\n\nJoin
visionary biologist and naturalist E.O. Wilson and other special guests for
a discussion moderated by Sally Jewell about the core science and common
humanity that is driving the success of Half-Earth, and how we can all work
together to save the natural world. Introduction by Paul Alivisatos,
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost for the UC Berkeley campus. Opening
talk: Framing the Problem, by Stephen H. Lockhart. Presentation: The
Science Behind the Solution, by Walter Jetz, Yale University and Scientific
Chair of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation.\n\nTHE HALF-EARTH
PROJECT\n\nThe Half-Earth Project has science at its core and our
transcendent moral obligation to the rest of life at its heart. In
collaboration with our partners, we are working to power one of the
grandest conservation efforts of our time and provide the urgently needed
research, leadership, and knowledge necessary to conserve half the planet
for all of life.\n\nWhen 90% of habitat is removed, the number of species
that can persist sustainably will descend to about a half. Such is the
actual condition of many of the most species-rich localities around the
world. In these places, if 10% of the remaining natural habitat were then
also removed, most or all of the surviving resident species would
disappear.\n\nIf, on the other hand, we protect half the global surface,
the fraction of species protected will be 85%, or more. At one-half and
above, life on Earth enters the safe
 zone.\n\nhttps://www.half-earthproject.org/\n\nEVENT

Foundation \nand UC Berkeley College Of Natural Resources\n\n
