DESCRIPTION:You're invited to attend this FREE survey of how Mission Creek, now chiefly
underground (but still flowing), has sustained and given advantage to a
succession of humans over the past 1,000 and more years.\nWe begin with a
twenty minute walk through the original Mission site, including the Spanish
structure dating back to the 18th century. There is a small charge to enter
the Mission museum and grounds; this charge does not go to the walking
tour, which is FREE.\nNext we step above subterranean Mission Creek,
following its course as nearly as possible along sidewalks as a narrative
unfolds regarding the Ohlone Indians, the Spanish, the Californios, and the
American inhabitants of this evolving habitat.\nThe walk concludes at the
once-upon-a-time edge of a lagoon that provided direct sustenance for the
Ohlone, and now provides rent for landlords.\nThe walk, led by San
Francisco social economics historian David Giesen, raises Cain about the
privatization of the former marsh cane land now known as San Francisco.\n
