DESCRIPTION:RSVP on EventBrite -
 Free!\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/build-your-own-internet-v5-fall-2018-tickets-52447687445\n\nDo
you think internet should be a public commons rather than a corporate
monopoly?\n\nFollowing Aspiration Tech’s annual Nonprofit Software
Development Summit, come on over to Omni Commons to learn about the history
of the internet, how it works, and how to build your own. Meet and mingle
with civic hackers and organizers behind PeoplesOpen.Net: an open,
community-based, wireless network in the East Bay.\n\nJoin us for food,
family-friendly activities, and conversation about the state of the
internet today, the physical work that goes into stewarding an internet
commons, and the possibilities you see in owning and operating a piece of a
community wireless network.\n\n* No experience building internets
necessary! Experience living and speaking with neighbors in your
communities desired! Curiosity recommended :) *\n\n- Print a t-shirt and
make buttons!\n- Crimp an internet cable!\n- Learn about the sweet nothings
computers whisper to each other when you aren't looking!\n- Map your
 neighborhood resources!\n- Eat tasty foods!\n\n\nAgenda:\n2:00pm –
Why/what/how of the internet\n2:30pm – Snack, mingle, share and
 experiment\n3:00pm – Hands-on workshop with a variety of learning
 stations\n5:00pm – end -> post-workshop hangouts.\n\nDonations accepted
to offset the cost of tasty food!\n\n\nThe Omni Commons Ballroom\n4799
Shattuck, Oakland, CA\n\nThe Omni Commons is 8 blocks (half of a mile) from
MacArthur BART station, 2 blocks from AC transit, and substantial bike
parking is available on sidewalk around the front of the building.\n\nThe
venue is wheelchair-accessible. We ask attendees that they come to the
event scent-free. The venue uses scent-free cleaning products but we
unfortunately cannot make guarantees as various organizations and community
members rent and come through the space.\n\nFor info about previous events
see: https://peoplesopen.net/workshop\n\n\n\nBuild Your Own Internet is a
quarterly workshop organized by the volunteers building the People's Open
Network.\n\n\nThe People's Open Network enables anyone to share their
Internet connection or extend signal from neighboring nodes. Learn more at
peoplesopen.net.\n\nPeople's Open Network operates out of Oakland creative
community and hackerspace Sudo Room. Sudo Room is a member collective of
the Omni Commons. The Omni Commons is a 100% volunteer-run space for
community organizing, collaboration, and creative production located in
North Oakland. Learn more at omnicommons.org.\n
