DESCRIPTION:4/24 Oakland Education Association To Rally And March For A
Contract\n\n“We need smaller class sizes and caseloads so we can give
students more 1:1 attention. We need more resources for our most vulnerable
students, and we need fair pay in order to attract and retain great
teachers for our kids. OUSD must re-prioritize the budget in order to give
our students the schools they deserve.”\n\nTuesday, April 24, 2018 4:00PM
 - 6:00PM:\n\nOakland educators, parents, and community will rally at Lake
Merritt Amphitheater and march to the offices of the Oakland Unified School
 District at 1000 Broadway.\n\nMEDIA ADVISORY\n\nFOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE\n\nOakland Teachers have been working without a contract since July
1, 2017. As a follow up to the Work to Contract Week of March 26 - March
29, there will be a community march to demand that OUSD put real proposals
on the table in order to settle the contract with the members of the
Oakland Education Association.\n\nOAKLAND – Oakland educators have
been working without a contract since July 1, 2017. The district has not
demonstrated that settling the contract is a priority.\n\nOUSD is losing
educators to surrounding districts every year. Uncertainty about a contract
will increase those numbers. Students deserve more support than overcrowded
classrooms and high caseloads can provide. With increased revenue from the
state of at least $20 million dollars in ongoing money and $8 million in
one time money, it’s time for OUSD to bring real proposals to the table
in order to settle this contract.\n\nTrish Gorham, President, Oakland
Education Association, “OEA members put students at the center of
everything we do, every day. When we witness money being misspent on high
administrative salaries and budget mistakes paid for with cuts to workers
and students we feel justified in questioning OUSD budget
priorities.”\n\nBethany Meyer, Special Education Teacher, Piedmont Avenue
Elementary, “We need smaller class sizes and caseloads so we can give
students more 1:1 attention. We need more resources for our most vulnerable
students, and we need fair pay in order to attract and retain great
teachers for our kids. OUSD must re-prioritize the budget in order to give
our students the schools they deserve.”\n\nDeirdre Snyder, Spanish
Teacher, Oakland Technical High School, “Democracy depends on our public
education system. We need to fund our children’s
future.”\n\n#####\n\nThe Oakland Education Association is affiliated
with the 325,000-member California Teachers Association and the 3
million-member National Education Association. \n\n\n\nUnite for Oakland
 Kids!!!\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1992437647686611/?active_tab=about\n\nWe
are negotiating to prioritize STUDENT LEARNING over wasteful bloat in OUSD.
\n\nOakland Teachers need a FAIR CONTRACT NOW. We are demanding SMALLER
CLASS SIZE and FAIR COMPENSATION and the District has disrespected us over
and over by offering us almost nothing. \n\nOn April 24th, we will show the
District that Students, Families and Teachers are UNITED behind PUTTING
STUDENTS AT THE CENTER! In order to provide the highest quality education,
we need SMALLER CLASS SIZE and CASE LOADS! In order to have teachers stay
in Oakland, we need FAIR COMPENSATION!\n\nTeachers and Families have
mobilized in West Virginia and Oklahoma! This is our turn, come out on
 April
 24th!\n\n#OEAContractNow\n#StudentsAtTheCenter\n#SmallerClassSize\n#FairPay\n#Equity\n
