DESCRIPTION:Dick Gregory, life-long social justice activist/author passed this year. To
my chagrin I hadn't read any of his writings until this past month, and
what a sensation of being cast out of the belly of the whale with a renewed
sense of mission-to-Nineveh his THE SHADOW THAT SCARES ME delivered
me.\n\nMy walking tour of San Francisco social movements history has, for
19 years, surveyed a slew of efforts to, in Gregory's turn of phrase, "get
the oppressor off the oppressed person's back." A short list of these
efforts would include Black Liberation, LGBTQ Liberation, Women's
Liberation, housing rights. My walk has explored these and several other
social movements, positing a unifying principle with all of them, namely a
struggle for "security in geography," which might more elaborately be typed
as the desire to no longer be considered the outsider or "the
other."\n\nGregory identifies racism (as have others of course) as
exclusionary behavior by those who create through rhetoric fatuous
divisions within humanity. Confronting this rhetoric and commensurate
behavior is the deep down objective of social justice work.\n\nCome along
on a walking tour which explores this rhetoric, explodes its slander and
libel, and puts forward a gritty social policy adjustment originally
articulated in 19th century San Francisco which comprehensively
extinguishes the bite of racism.\n\nFREE. \n
