DESCRIPTION:Humanism in Puerto Rico: a Light of Reason in the Isle of Enchantment
\n\nToday's presentation will cover the history of Puerto Rico's church and
state debates since the Paris Treaty to the present. From its cultural
ingrained Catholicism to its mixture with Santeria and other pagan
traditions, Puerto Rico has a particularly rich variety of traditions that
have shaped its present melting pot. And now that a fervent religious right
has more politicians in power than ever, this is also a hopeful story of
how effective secular humanism can be in shaping the debate and protecting
human rights.\n\nAntonio Jose Torres graduated from the University of
Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras where he studied economics and accounting. He has
been active in the secular movement and did legal research as well as the
treasury for Humanistas Seculares de Puerto Rico before moving to
California in 2016. Having gone from fervent conspiracy theory believer to
skeptic, he discusses some of the most common struggles that millennials
are facing in the island between faith and reason.\n\nLectures are free and
 open to the public. \n
