DESCRIPTION:The Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at UC Berkeley is
hosting its second Othering & Belonging conference April 30-May 2 in
Oakland. Bringing together an array of acclaimed scholars, activists,
policy makers, faith leaders, and other thought leaders, the conference
will provide the platform and capacity for a multifaceted exploration of
the many dimensions of Othering in our society—as well as concrete
strategies for building widespread Belonging. Attendees and speakers will
attempt to answer the question: How do we think about, talk about, and give
birth to a world where all belong? \n\nKeynote speakers will include
world-renowned scholars like sociologist Saskia Sassen, lauded for her work
on globalization and international migration, social justice activists like
#BlackLivesMatter co-founder Alicia Garza and former head of Greenpeace
International Kumi Naidoo, and artists like photographer LaToya Ruby
Frazier and playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, who wrote the play upon which
the award-winning film Moonlight was based. Activist and commentator
