DESCRIPTION:≈ 700 million pounds of sand are illegally mined from the Monterey Bay
National Marine Sanctuary every year\n\n⚠️ LEARN WHAT YOU CAN DO TO
STOP IT ON MARCH 30th!\n\nJoin Surfrider and Save our Shores at Patagonia
Santa Cruz for a short documentary film screening on the illegal CEMEX
Lapis Lustre Sand Mining operation and its environmental and economic
impact along the Monterey Bay – specifically on how the mine is severely
exacerbating erosion rates.\n\nAfter the screening, there’ll be Q&A time
with the experts in the documentary. The night will conclude with a very
special letter writing and social media campaign, launching our next
community push to permanently close the illegal sand mine.\n\nThis is a
free event with ? ☕️?!! Discretion Brewery will be serving the zesty
Save Our Shores Submarine Canyon IPA & Alta Organic Coffee will be serving
the aromatic Save Our Shores Blend ?\n\nTHE LAST COASTAL SAND MINE\n\nIs a
10-minute documentary and the brainchild of local filmmaker Ed Schehl, who
focuses on producing short films on environmental and social issues. Ed
read about the last US coastal sand mining operation in the paper and
attended our first screening of Sand Wars at Patagonia in 2016. Feeling
inspired, Ed told us that: \n\n“I felt it was important to make a short
documentary about this issue, to reach as many people as possible… So we
can work to protect the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary.”\n\nThe Last
Coastal Sand Mine includes interviews with:\n\nEd B. Thornton, Ph.D.
(Professor Ret. Naval Postgraduate School)\nGary B. Griggs, Ph.D.
(Director, UCSC Institute of Marine Sciences)\nDavid L. Revell, Ph.D.
(Principal & Chief Scientist, Revell Coastal)\nJason Scorse, Ph.D.
