DESCRIPTION:Film * Speaker * Q&A * Light Refreshments\n\nDOROTHY FADIMAN\nFilmmaker,
Author, Teacher\nThe History: When Abortion Was Illegal & The Struggle to
Legalize Abortion\n\nThe Supreme Court has just heard a case from Texas
that represents the gravest threat in years to women’s right to access
legal, safe abortions. The case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt,
centers around the latest tactic being used by anti-choice activists:
targeted regulation of abortion providers, or TRAP. Over twenty state
legislatures have attempted to severely restrict access to clinics by
imposing burdensome, nearly impossible to meet requirements on the
clinics.\n\nThese restrictions are causing clinics around the country to
close their doors, leaving millions of women without any affordable access.
In states that have passed TRAP legislation, the majority of women who
suffer from the loss of access are the poor. In Texas in particular, those
most targeted are poor Latinas.\n\nFor this Women’s History Month special
program, Dorothy Fadiman will present selections from her Emmy
Award-winning film trilogy, From the Back Alleys to the Supreme Court and
Beyond. This deeply moving documentary presents the stark history of what
life was like for American women before abortion was made legal, safe and
widely available, all elements now at risk of returning. Dorothy will also
present portions of her documentary that record the history of women
demanding their rights, resulting in Roe v Wade.\n\nPost Film Discussion:
the ramifications of the recent Supreme Court case, the wide-ranging and
highly organized use of TRAP laws nationally to challenge women’s
hard-won rights, and what the future of freedom of choice might look
like.\n\nWe will begin the program with a very brief video tribute to Berta
Cáceres, the Honduran environmental and indigenous rights activists who
was recently assassinated.\n\nFree and open to all. Wheelchair
accessible.\nPlease let us know if you plan to attend. Click
