DESCRIPTION:In July, the P5 + 1 (five permanent members of the United Nations Security 
 Council and Germany) signed a deal with Iran to halt Iran's ability to 
 build a nuclear weapon for at least 10 years. The deal could be a 
 meaningful step along the path to a more peaceful Middle East.\n\nThe Joint 
 Cooperative Plan of Action (JCPOA) has already faced its share of 
 detractors: Many Congressional Republicans and a handful of Democrats 
 spearheaded a letter to Iran prior to and unsuccessful legislation 
 following the agreement, all meant to derail it. Israel still talks about 
 military action, and has its backers for that in Congress as well as the 
 U.S. national security establishment\n\nAndy Lichterman, board member and 
 policy analyst for the Oakland-based Western States Legal Foundation, will 
 discuss the deal and its immediate implications. Andy will also review the 
 long-running confrontation with Iran over its nuclear program, as well as 
 less-discussed aspects of the broader context of nuclear weapons. These 
 include the forces that drive acquisition of nuclear technology worldwide - 
 and how movements for a more fair and peaceful world might well respond to 
 conflicts among states at a time when many governments are largely 
 unaccountable to their people. As such, he will address creating the kind 
 of broad political climate where a deal such as the JCPOA would be harder 
 to attack than has lately been the case.\n\nAndy Lichterman is a lawyer who 
 has represented peace and environmental activists in a variety of settings, 
 and also taught at alternative law schools for many years. In recent years 
 his work has focused on the purposes and impacts of U.S. nuclear and other 
 strategic weapons programs - including their effect on global disarmament 
 efforts. He has also focused on the relationship between nuclear 
 technologies, militarism, and the global economy.\n\nJoin us for insight on
