arrested in fatal stabbing of Contra Costa College professor's son...\n By
 Rick Hurd and David DeBolt Tuesday, July 7, 2015 - 10:57 p.m.RICHMOND -- A
50-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stabbing to death the
son of a longtime Contra Costa College professor and Native American
activist, police said.\n Police arrested Mark Nelson on Tuesday evening at
the Sea Horse Motel at 909 Cutting Boulevard in Richmond, Capt. Mark Gagan
said.Nelson allegedly stabbed Lakota Brightman, 45, on Friday about 10 p.m.
outside a liquor store in the 1400 block of Carlson Boulevard, police
said.\nAter an argument, Brightman was stabbed in the upper left side of
his body and reportedly staggered into the store after being wounded and
employees called an ambulance, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.He died at a
hospital.\nBrightman served the U.S. Army as a medic in Afghanistan from
2007-08, his brother Quanah Brightman said.\n "The thing that's so painful
is that he was murdered in cold blood, and here he is, somebody who fought
for and served his country and what's it been, four days?" Quanah Brightman
said Tuesday before the announcement of Nelson's arrest, calling the
situation "unacceptable.\n "Brightman's death came only four months after
his brother, Lehman Brightman III, was found dead on train tracks in
Richmond. Both had been living as transients, according to authorities.\n
Their father, Lehman Brightman, is a member of the Sioux tribe, Korean War
veteran and longtime Contra Costa College history on sociology professor.
He taught at the school from the early 1970s until his retirement in
2006.\n The elder Brightman was active in the
‪#‎UnitedNativeAmericans‬ particularly in the 1960s and 70s when
activists took over Alcatraz Island and helped lead the "Longest Walk," a
spiritual walk from San Francisco to Washington D.C. in 1978.\n In 1976,
the Brightmans' home was raided by federal authorities looking for activist
and fugitive Dennis Banks, who was hiding in the El Cerrito home.\n Now 85,
Britghtman resides in a Walnut Creek care home.\n "I've been stabbed in the
heart twice this year," his brother Quanah Brightman said. "My father is a
hero, and my brother is a hero. It's been a real brutal year for my
family."Police believe Nelson acted alone. He was booked at County Jail in
Martinez on suspicion of murder.\n Contact Rick Hurd at 925-945-4789 and
