DESCRIPTION:No New SF Jail! Stop the SF Jail Fast-Track!\nDemand Full EIR Review! No
Application for State Funds!\nSF Supes Hearing, Tuesday, July 21st, 3 PM.
City Hall, Room 250\n\nThe SF Supervisors will be voting \n\n(1) whether to
approve the Planning Department’s decision to allow the project to
proceed without a complete Environmental Impact Report (the so-called
“negative declaration”) and\n\n(2) whether to approve the City's
application for $80 million from the State to ease the $600+ million this
project would cost.\n\nPlease come to this hearing and speak.\n\nThe City
is trying to railroad this disastrous project through despite widespread
community opposition. We say this program is a disaster because (1) the
overwhelmingly disproportionate percentage of people of color in SF jails,
 (2) the large proportion of SF inmates awaiting trial but too poor to make
bail, (3) the low crime rate and low occupancy of SF jails, meaning current
inmates could be housed in present facilities, (4) the huge cost of the
project, servicing a debt of $600 million over a thirty year period,
instead of supplying vital health and human services, and (5) loss of an
opportunity to embrace more effective and humane alternatives to
incarceration, ranging from immediate changes like bail reform, to
long-range solutions like affordable supportive housing and mental health
services.\n\n\nWith two police murders of Latin residents, a major scandal
of racist and homophobic text messages with death threats by SF police, the
stepped-up police profiling of black, Latin, and poor residents of areas
like the Mission that are selected for gentrification and displacement, and
the plan to hire hundreds more police, our reasons for opposing a new jail
and hiring new police are stronger than ever. Police Chief Greg Suhr has
already signaled that a new SF jail and hundreds of more police would lead
to increased criminalization of homelessness and profiling of black, brown,
and poor residents in areas targeted for development and
gentrification.\n\nCritical Resistance has issued an important new People's
Report, showing how much this jail/police program would cost, how many
services would have to be sacrificed to pay for it, why this jail/police
program is unnecessary, what the alternatives are, and how to get involved
and join the fight against it. The People's Report is available at
