DESCRIPTION:Last year Peace Action of San Mateo County offered "The Bomb", Part 3 of
 Academy Award-winning writer/director Oliver Stone's widely acclaimed
Untold History of the United States. We are following up that showing with
another free screening of Part 5: "Eisenhower, The Bomb and The Third
World". This will take place on Sunday, May 31, 7 PM at the Unitarian
Universalists of San Mateo, 300 E. Santa Inez Avenue in San Mateo.
Admission is free, contributions will be welcome. The episode lasts about
an hour. The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.\n\nIn this episode, Stone
focuses on the 1950's and an interesting take on the Cold War. We will get
a look at how our relationship with the then-Soviet Union deteriorated
despite a joint effort to win World War II and the death of Soviet dictator
Joseph Stalin. Nuclear weapons have another starring role in Part 5 as the
U.S. develops the hydrogen bomb - among other ways of rearming itself.
American hegemony plays out in Korea and the Third World, and McCarthyism
rears its head while claiming some political victims. All of this takes
place on the watch of President Dwight Eisenhower - the political focus of
this segment.\n\nThis is just one of 10 original episodes and two
subsequent "prologues" created by Stone, who in the spirit of the late
historian Howard Zinn set out to create a documentary series that would
show our country's story from a more honest and frank perspective than most
of us were offered in school.\n\nAs always, we will follow up the screening
with an open discussion about the parallels between those times and
these.\nCome join us on the 31st for an illuminating night - courtesy of
 Oliver Stone and PASMC.\n
