DESCRIPTION:No Sir! Whistleblowing and GI Resistance During the Vietnam War: An Evening
with Daniel Ellsberg, With Film Screening and Panel Discussion of “Sir!
No Sir!”\n\nTalk by Daniel Ellsberg: “The Silence of the Doves”
\n\nThe famous whistleblower who leaked the materials that became known as
The Pentagon Papers will talk about those leaders who opposed the war but
chose instead to “swallow the whistle.”\n\nSince the end of the Vietnam
War, Daniel Ellsberg has been a lecturer, writer and activist on the
dangers of the nuclear era, wrongful U.S. interventions and the urgent need
for patriotic whistleblowing. \n\nDocumentary screening: “Sir! No Sir!”
(David Zeiger, 2005)\nIn the 1960’s, an anti-war movement emerged that
altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college
campuses, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army
stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases.
It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point. And it spread
throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected,
least of all those in it. Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile.
And by 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed
services. Yet today few people know about the GI movement against the war
in Vietnam. \n\nFollowed by a panel discussion with GI activists,
conscientious objectors, and resisters featured in the film: Mike Wong &
Keith Mather. Joined by Ellsberg & moderated by Paul Cox.\n\nThis event is
free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible. If you need any
disability accommodations in order to attend, including communication
services, please contact sschweik@berkeley.edu.\n\nFeatured Speaker: Daniel
Ellsberg\nFeatured Panelists: Mike Wong, Keith Mather\nFeatured Artist:

Campaign, A Project of Veterans of Peace, Jeanne Friedman, Paul
Cox\n\nTarget audience: All Audiences\nOpen to audience: All Audiences\n
