 magazine and a columnist for the East Village Eye, gaining a reputation as 
 a writer of hilarious stories and a maven of New York’s downtown art 
 world.\n\nAlthough she died from AIDS in 1989, Cookie’s notoriety and 
 impact have grown in recent years. She has become a counter-culture icon.
