DESCRIPTION:Set in 1938 colonial India, against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi’s rise
to influence, the story begins when eight-year-old child-bride Chuyia is
widowed and sent to a temple where Hindu widows are forced into poverty
(and worse) in the holy city of Varanasi, on the waters of the Ganges. In
Hindu India, widows are traditionally stigmatized as deserving of their
fates, as poisonous presences whose own bad karma led to the deaths of
their husbands. In addition, many widows find themselves rejected by their
husband’s family as competition for family resources, a burden and a
drain. However, Chuyia’s rebellious and feisty presence in this deeply
marginalized and oppressed community affects the lives of the other
residents, including another older widow, who falls for a Gandhian
idealist. Directed by Deepa Mehta, this is part of her acclaimed Elements
trilogy.\n\nSponsored by the BFUU Social Justice Ctee as part of our
