DESCRIPTION:Dana Cafe: Praising the Natural World - Songs, Rhythms & Philosophy of
Regla De Ocha with Carolyn Brandy\n\nDana Cafe is a monthly gathering in
Oakland CA offering transformational teachings at no cost to participants.
Each month on first Sunday, we invite a different teacher from various arts
and healing traditions. Our monthly classes are offered for Dana (give as
you are able and inspired) and there is no set fee to attend.\n\nWe are so
happy to welcome Carolyn Brandy to lead the next Dana Cafe session, April
5th! Bring your drums & percussion instruments if you have them and if you
don't have a drum, bring and open mind, heart, your voice and your hands!
Join us as we explore the folklore, songs & philosophy of Regla De
Ocha.\n\nRegla De Ocha or Santeria is an indigenous spiritual practice
brought to Cuba during the Diaspora from the great civilization of the
Yoruba people of Nigeria. This philosophy has spread to the 4 corners of
the world because of its flexible, profound and beautiful understanding of
the dimension we live in.\n\nCarolyn Brandy is a percussionist, composer,
performer, educator, and Cultural Worker. She started playing the Conga
Drums in 1968, and has been a pioneer in opening doors for women in the
male-dominated world of percussion. A drummer and student of Cuban
folkloric music for over 40 years, she has been a practitioner of the
Yoruba-based Cuban religion, Regla de Ocha, also known as Santeria, since
1977. She was initiated as a priest of the religion in Havana, Cuba by
Amelita Pedroso in 2000. She has led six tours to the Island of Cuba to
study Folkloric music and dance. She has organized workshops in Havana,
Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Camaguey, Santiago De Cuba, Guantanamo, and Baracoa
where the groups have studied with masters of Afro-Cuban Folkloric
 music.\nwww.borntodrum.net www.womendrummers.org
