DESCRIPTION:Transition Berkeley invites you to an evening about how gardens help build
communities in urban settings. Come join us for locally grown garden
snacks, meet and greet at 6:30. At 7pm we’ll see a film about an amazing
garden in Southern California, learn why it was threatened and how the
community came together to try to save it. \nAnd we’ll get a report on
the state of community gardens here in our own backyard from local
gardeners Bonnie Borucki (Ashby Garden), Carole Bennett-Simmons, Dave
Drummond (Peralta Gardens), Alexa Hauser (Edible Landscape Project), Carol
Wolfley (Berkeley Post Office Garden) and Beebo Turman (Berkeley Gardening
Collaborative). \nThe Garden is about a 14 acre community garden at 41st
and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles: the largest of its kind in the
United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A.
riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers had created a miracle in one of
the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food.
Feeding their families. Creating a community. The film follows the plight
of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished
marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries
where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them
organize, fight back, and demand answers.\n\nFor more info:
