DESCRIPTION:In the March 2001 News & Letters, John Alan's Black/Red column, "Hegel and
Black history," was an appreciation and critique of Susan Buck-Morss'
original article "Hegel and Haiti" where she took the whole world of Hegel
scholarship to task for not even considering that the Black masses in the
Haitian Revolution of 1803 were the source for Hegel's famous narrative on
 the master/slave relation in Hegel's Phenomenology. In 2009 Buck-Morss
added a discussion to answer her critics along with her original article in
a book, Hegel, Haiti, and Universal History.\n\nThis Sunday, October 5 at
6:30 pm we will discuss Buck-Morss' dialog with her critics, especially
 John Alan.\n\nSunday, October 5, 6:30 p.m.\nNiebyl-Proctor Library\n6501
