DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of handcrafted ceramic cups will be distributed to veterans and
community members during the free Community Day and Containers of Community
Closing Celebration on September 7, noon-4 p.m., at the Palo Alto Art
Center, 1313 Newell Road, Palo Alto.\n\nAll of the wheel-thrown ceramic
cups were created onsite by veteran and Berkeley-based artist Ehren Tool
during his June residency. The cups have been presented in the Glass
Gallery of the Art Center, along with a selection of monotypes, to honor
the community of veterans and highlight their shared experience. Prior to
the residency, the Palo Alto Art Center collected images and artifacts from
community members, relating to their own service or that of their friends
and family.\n\nEhren creates ceramic objects that promote awareness and
dialogue about the consequences of war. All of his cups are wheel-thrown
and feature decal-produced and embossed images and symbols related to war,
violence, and the veteran experience in cross-generational conflicts.
Since 2001, he has given away most of these cups, offering more than 14,500
to members of various communities.\n\nA Veteran Artist Panel will also be
held on Sept. 7, from 3-4 p.m., in the meeting room of the Art Center.
During this discussion, Ehren and other veteran artists will discuss the
importance of art in their lives, and how art serves as a critical form of
self-expression for the greater community.\n\nCombat Paper Exhibition, will
also be on view at the Art Center August 27-September 28. During this
exhibition, people will be able to view mixed-media works by San Francisco
artist collaborative Combat Paper. Working in communities affected by
warfare, Combat Paper leads hand papermaking workshops for veterans and
uses papermaking processes to transform uniforms and artifacts into art. A
two-day hand papermaking workshop for veterans and non-veterans will be
held at the Art Center on September 6, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and on September 7,
 noon-3 p.m.\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2014/08/20/18760357.php
