DESCRIPTION:Reset The Net SF - Shame on Feinstein Delivers Thousands of Petitions to
Dianne Feinstein Noon June 5th\n\nSan Francisco-On the one year anniversary
of the first Edward Snowden revelation, Internet users nationwide will
"reset the net" for a safer and more secure on-line experience and Bay Area
activists will deliver thousands of petitions to CA senator Dianne
Feinstein at her 1 Post Street street offices. Activists will meet with
Feinstein aide John Murray at 11:00am and talk with press and supporters
outside 1 Post Street at noon. \n\nWho: Reset The Net San Francisco
Event\n\nWhen: June 5, 2014 Noon\n\nWhere: San Francisco office of Senator
Dianne Feinstein. Post and Market Streets San Francisco\n\nWhy: Because
denying mass surveillance and failing to effectively oversee the
intelligence community as the Chair of Senate Intelligence isn't okay.
Senator Feinstein should resign as chair of the Senate Intelligence
Committee and stop undermining real reform of NSA surveillance. \n\nThe
Shame on Feinstein Coalition came together in November of 2013 with anchor
groups Restore The Fourth-Bay Area, The Bill of Rights Defense Committee
(BORDC), Code Pink, Media Alliance, The 99% Coalition and the National
Lawyers Guild-SF. 26 groups and 2,046 individuals signed an open letter to
CA's senior senator demanding an end to her denial of the extent of
domestic and international surveillance and her attempts to obstruct
reform. \n\nThe open letter can be seen here:
https://shameonfeinstein.org/.\n\nIn the ensuing seven months, the
Senator's position was undermined by revelations about CIA spying on the
Senate Intelligence Committee itself which, rightfully, raised Senator
Feinstein's umbrage, just as earlier reports of mass blanket surveillance
upset hundreds of thousands of Americans.\n\nSenator Feinstein's determined
efforts to undermine the best hope for legislative reform, the USA Freedom
Act, contributed to that bill's unfortunate watering-down to the extent
most major civil liberties groups withdrew their endorsement. Her
championing of a fake reform bill (The FISA Improvements Act) that
retroactively legalized bulk collection was a deceptive measure that
actually would have expanded NSA spying activity while claiming
otherwise.\n\nWith hundreds of thousands taking their online privacy and
safety matters into their own hands on Thursday, CA's senior senator is out
of step and out of touch with her constituents here in one of the country's
most tech-savvy states. Unconstitutional surveillance activities aren't
defensible. The erosion of the ability to engage in effective diplomacy
with allies such as Gemany due to anger about spying makes Americans less
safe and secure, at home and abroad. As the chair of the Senate
Intelligence Committee Feinstein is tasked with providing "vigilant
legislative oversight over the intelligence activities of the United States
to assure that such activities are in conformity with the Constitution and
laws of the United States. In this capacity,Senator Feinstein has failed
the country. Under her watch the NSA has shredded the Constitution and her
failure to act in the capacity as chair of the only committee tasked with
overseeing federal intelligence programs has enabled these constitutional
violations to continue. \n\nStatement from the Shame on Feinstein anchor
groups:\n\nOn June 5th, 2013 Edward Snowden began to reveal to the world
that the system of laws, traditions and institutions that make the United
States a vibrant democracy have been exploited by a surveillance state
beyond control.\n\nMembers of the Shame on Feinstein coalitions represent
core constituencies for Senator Feinstein. \n\nSenator Feinstein’s
leadership has allowed a climate of fear to fester among her constituents.
Almost 1/4th of our signatories chose to withhold their names from public
view.\n\nNothing we’ve seen in the last year suggests the Senator
Feinstein is capable of the needed reforms. She has defended the NSA
relentlessly as falsehood after falsehood has been revealed.\n\nThe USA
FREEDOM Act, once our best chance for legislative reform, has been gutted
in the House. Now is the time for Senator Feinstein to abandon her defense
of mass surveillance and embrace the principles of our
 Constitution.\n\n ###\n\n
