DESCRIPTION:Dear Constituents,\n\nThe next Council Meeting is on Tuesday, May 13th at
809 Center Street. At 7PM, the Council will consider redressing a decision
to so greatly limit non-commercial activity downtown that we lost some
beloved artists, including the Great Morgani. A proposal by Councilmembers
Lane and Comstock will create markings on the sidewalk to welcome artists
with a place where they are WELCOME to be and not just harassing them with
a bewildering series of rules about where they cannot. Additionally, some
of the spaces will be big enough to allow for displays of art and/or
multi-player acts. Please consider reading the proposal at
cityofsantacruz.com. Then give the council your feedback:
citycouncil@cityofsantacruz.com.\n\nAlso on the agenda is a modest plan to
bring City Council pay back up to 2008 levels. Personally, this would bring
my wage up from $12.00 an hour, to $13.00, which is close to the city’s
official minimum livable wage. It would also have some incremental effect
on encouraging people to run for City Council who are not independently
wealthy. Tell the Council how you feel at citycouncil@cityofsantacruz.com
or come to the meeting starting at 2:30PM.\n\nHopefully you are following
our efforts to limit campaign spending in City Council elections. If you
are inclined to favor candidates who agree to limits, please register your
opinion at santacruzelectionreform.org BEFORE the candidates decide whether
or not to agree to the voluntary limit. For a long term, if incremental
fix, Councilmember Lane and I have crafted a proposal to use a modest
amount of public campaign financing for candidates who agreed to overall
expenditure limits. We are also proposing to make current voluntary
donation caps mandatory. Over 40 cities, including San Francisco, have
similar policies. We will be bringing the proposal to the City Council on
June 10th. Read the full proposal at santacruzelectionreform.org. Again, if
you agree with this idea it is absolutely critical that you register your
opinion at santacruzelectionreform.org. This kind of reform does not happen
without grassroots participation. \n\nIf you are already convinced that
local candidates should accept limits, we need your help talking to voters.
Please join me in walking precincts and/or calling voters on May 28 and
29th and June 3rd and 4th from 5:30 to 8PM. Contact awesome intern Justin
Burke to RSVP: jcburke@ucsc.edu. It takes some work to change the status
quo but I believe that most of the people of Santa Cruz agree that real
democracy needs monetary limits.\n\nAs always, those of you who disagree
with this proposal or others that I support continue to enjoy my full
respect.\n\nThank you for your attention and your participation,\n\nMicah
