DESCRIPTION:On Saturday, May 17, we will present an event that asks a couple of
questions:\n* What really happened in the United States' pursuit of nuclear
weapons?\n* Who will be Nancy Pelosi's opponent in November?\n\nThe first
question, and at least part of its answer, arises from one particular
episode of filmmaker Oliver Stone's "Untold History of the United States".
This is a 10-part documentary series that played on Showtime beginning in
late 2012.\n\nEntitled simply "The Bomb", Episode 3 of the series looks at
both the strategies and the mythology around the atomic bombing of Japan.
Besides bringing incredible destruction on two cities in Japan and death
among their citizenries, the bombings also launched the Cold War, whose
implications shaped a lot of American politics in the mid-19th
century...and now are back with us in a major way. Stone's episode also
examines the role of nuclear weapons as a threat to life on the planet.
Peace Action will show this episode in the evening's "first act".\n\nWe
will then turn our attention to electoral politics, with Peace Action
member Barry Hermanson presenting his case for running for the seat of
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. California's "top two" primary system
offers the potential for a number of possible candidates - not necessarily
Republicans - to face Pelosi.\n\nAs a member of the Green Party, Hermanson
feels he has as much chance as any of the other 7 candidates to gain a
foothold in the race for the June 3 primary. He plans to urge Pelosi to
answer questions of national importance in a public forum, and he feels
that many of the issues he will raise resonate with members of Peace
Action. In fact, they already have, based on the descriptive pie charts
Hermanson created a few years ago depicting outsized U.S. military
spending. On May 17, in a short talk, Hermanson will raise this and other
issues such as living wages around the world, ending drone warfare and
taxing carbon emissions.\nThe UUSM is wheelchair accessible.\n
