DESCRIPTION:Global Day of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS). Each Spring, the
Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) releases global
military spending (in which the U.S. spends the most).\n\nWHO: Speakers
will include Women for Genuine Security’s Reverend Deborah Lee, a
representative of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, County Supervisor Wilma Chan,
Mayor for Peace and Western States Legal Foundation’s Jackie Cabasso, US
Labor Against the War’s Michael Eisenscher, Reverend Daniel Buford, and
Dr. Henry Clark of the West County’s Toxic Coalition\n\nWHAT: Press
conference at 11:30 am. Photo opportunities/visuals include a banner
depicting the U.S. budget, Chalkupy’s artistic response to the theme of
Move the Money, and the Living Graveyard (12 noon to 1 pm) during which
people lie down on the city sidewalk and names of Californians who have
died in Iraq along with some names of Iraqis killed are read. \n\nWomen
for Genuine Security’s Reverend Deborah Lee notes that “it's time for
the war money to come home. Not be shifted to increased militarization in
the Asia-Pacific. There are tremendous needs for that money to be spent on
jobs, housing and education.”\n\n“More than 17,000 nuclear weapons,
most held by the U.S. and Russia, continue to pose an intolerable threat to
humanity,” declared Jackie Cabasso, Executive Director of Oakland’s
Western States Legal Foundation and North American Coordinator of Mayors
for Peace. Our government should be working in good faith to eliminate all
nuclear arms, not stealing more of our tax dollars to modernize these
weapons of mass destruction.” \n\nThe bi-partisan U.S. Conference of
Mayors (USCM) has called on the President and Congress to slash nuclear
weapons spending and to redirect those funds to meet the urgent needs of
cities, declaring: “Our nation’s deep economic crisis can only be
addressed by adopting new priorities to create a sustainable economy for
the 21st century.” \n\nCiting the USCM resolution Mayors Jean Quan of
Oakland, Gayle McLaughlin of Richmond, and the City Council of San Pablo
have issued Proclamations in support of GDAMS. \n\n
