DESCRIPTION:The severe drought conditions that have gripped our state and reduced flows 
 in the Russian River did not dry out our racers enthusiasm. When announcing 
 a possible cancellation of the popular canoe and kayak race due to expected 
 low flows, past participants and sponsors offered great ideas to keep the 
 race alive in the drought. The exchange of ideas resulted in the Drought 
 Edition of the Race, which will include a "paddle and portage" scenario 
 where boats will need to be carried over shallow areas of the 5-mile Race. 
 \n\nIn keeping with the Drought Edition theme, this year's race will 
 feature a Water Conservation Fair at the party that takes place at Veterans 
 Memorial Beach in Healdsburg on May 3rd from 12-4 p.m. Attendance is free. 
 \n\n"Unfortunately we did have to cancel the 15 mile course due to the 
 lower flows," said Race organizer and Russian Riverkeeper staff Kate 
 Wilson. "At the same time we're thrilled to be able to continue the 
 tradition of the race and maintain the primary source of Riverkeeper's 
 Education Program funding in this critical drought year."\n\nThis year's 
 race will be limited to 200 racers and is expected to sell out so racers 
 should get registered as soon as possible to avoid missing out. The free 
 River Race Party features music by Cahoots, local beer & wine, food trucks 
 and kids activities on the banks of the River. In addition, the Water 
 Conservation Fair with local agencies and organizations will help 
 demonstrate how you can reduce your water use in this drought.  "We hope 
 the community comes out to watch the race, it's a lot of fun and you can 
 bring beach blankets and spend the day along the river and listen to some 
 music and learn how you can make a difference to protect the river," said 
 Wilson.\n\n"The Race kicks off a summer of fun on the River that revives 
 past traditions to help fund our education program and puts those funds 
 towards improving our River's health."\n
