DESCRIPTION:Saturday, February 1\n16th and Mission BART Plaza\n1:00 PM\n\nA community
 event hosted by \nLa Plaza 16 Coalición / The Plaza 16 Coalition\n\n•
Help fight for affordable housing development that truly serves our
community.\n\n• Help fight for a Plaza and a neighborhood that is safe
and livable for everyone.\n\n• Learn more about a proposed development
project for the 16th and Mission Plaza that would have a profound and
lasting impact on the surrounding community.\n\n\nPotentially very big
changes are in store for the community surrounding the 16th Street BART
Plaza. An $82-million development with 351 residential housing units has
been proposed for 1979 Mission Street (adjacent to the plaza) and is
currently working its way through the City's approval process.\n\nLa Plaza
16 Coalición/ The Plaza 16 Coalition has come together to advocate for the
1979 Mission Street site to be used for much needed affordable housing in
the neighborhood. We do not believe the development project, as currently
proposed, primarily serves the needs of the existing community and thus we
will oppose the development unless it is tailored to meet the need for
truly affordable housing in the neighborhood.\n\nOur coalition builds on
the decades of planning and organizing in the Mission which created Plan
Popular and won affordable housing for our communities.\n\nIn addition we
envision a 16th St and Mission St. that has:\n\n1. Welcoming streets for
grandmothers, kids, tenants, homeless people - streets that reduce hazards,
and increase pedestrian safety and cultural vibrancy\n\n2. Increased public
open space\n\n3. A local economy of mom and pop entrepreneurship that
serves the needs of local residents and workers and supports the creation
of good jobs for community residents\n\n4. Planning that is conducted by
people who live and work in the neighborhood\n\n5. A strong local ecosystem
of resources and services that create healthy neighborhoods\n\n6. No more
market rate housing development until the needs for affordable housing are
 met\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2014/01/24/18749706.php
