DESCRIPTION:We meet every third Monday of the month to ask Apple to pay a fair share of
taxes. Here's why:\nAPPLE DODGES TAXES, WE PAY THE PRICE\nApple
Computer’s proposed new Cupertino campus has failed to consider the
devastating effect it will have on Santa Clara County’s affordable
housing crisis. The Environmental Impact Report states that this project
will create demand for approximately 6000 housing units in Santa Clara
County alone. Common sense tells us a large number of those units should be
affordable housing:\n•	many of the new jobs (especially those contracted
out to irresponsible companies like Security Industry Specialists) do not
offer wages and hours adequate to pay local rents or buy homes
\n•	increasing the number of high-income jobs heightens overall housing
demand, raises market rents, and squeezes low-income workers out of what
little housing is available to them now\n•	increasing the number of
upper-income jobs always leads to demand for services by low-wage workers,
who will also need affordable housing to be able to survive\nSanta Clara
County already has over 7000 homeless people every night, including the
largest homeless encampment in the continental United States. Some say the
solution is for the poor to just leave the area. Simultaneously they demand
people to serve them: prepare their food, wash their dishes, clean their
homes, mow their lawns, and change their hotel bed sheets – and to build
their houses, teach their children, and police their streets.\nApple’s
offer to mitigate its impact is woefully inadequate: it will only subsidize
25-50 affordable units, while the project is creating a housing shortfall
of thousands of homes.\nWe need innovative ways to force Silicon Valley
corporations to give their fair share back to the communities that protect
and serve them. Their status as technological icons cannot be accepted as
an excuse for socially irresponsible development. \n\n
