DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE\nCHANGE OF VENUE!\n\n This forum\nwill not be meeting in
Oakland after all, but in Berkeley. Please note\ncorrect location and
address below, as well as added speakers.\n \n\n\n\n\nThe\nBay Area Battle
in Transport: \nWorkers Face Employer Onslaught No\nMore \nDefeats Like
 Wisconsin! Business\nUnionism vs. \nClass
 Struggle\nUnionism\n\n \n          Public\nMeeting:\n\n November
10 (Sunday)\n2:00 PM \n At: Black Repertory Theater 3201 Adeline
Street,\nBerkeley\n \nAlthough\nBART workers marched through downtown
Oakland in August and October\nchanting "Strike, strike, strike!", union
officials\nshackled them with a concessionary contract. \nWhy did
BART\nworkers settle for a concessionary contract after fighting for
four\nmonths -- striking twice, staging militant mass rallies in
downtown\nOakland, and inspiring AC Transit bus drivers and mechanics to
twice\nvote down concessionary contracts -- each
time\noverwhelmingly? \n\nWhy did BART workers vote so resoundingly to
approve the\nconcessionary contract (more than 85% of those voting voted
"Yes")?\nWas this the best they could do? How could they have won a
better\ncontract?\nWhy didn't BART union leaders mobilize the rank
and\nfile (for example, through democratically elected strike
committees?)\nWhy wasn't there a joint strike committee of the BART unions
(ATU\n1555, SEIU 1021, and AFSCME 3993) and the AC Transit union (ATU
192)?\nWhy did ATU 192 president Yvonne Williams denounce a joint strike
of\nAC Transit workers and BART workers as "Armageddon"? \n\nWhy did BART
and AC Transit union officials put their faith\nin Democratic politicians
rather than reaching out aggressively to\nlabor and the community? Why did
 ATU 1555 leaders call on Jerry Brown\nto invoke a 60-day cooling-off period
to suspend the right to strike?\nHow can we defend the right to strike
for transit workers,\nwhen\nDemocratic state politicians are drafting
legislation to make such\nstrikes illegal? \nWhy did ILWU officials turn
their backs on\ntheir union's militant history and direct their members to
cross a\npicket line of port truckers and community supporters? How can
ILWU\nmembers reclaim the solidarity their union badly
needs.\nLongshoremen are locked out at two northwest ports. Scabs are
doing\ntheir work. And negotiations for the ILWU's master
contract\nfor\nall West Coast ports is just around the bend. \nHas the
labor\nmovement lost its class struggle moorings?  In its
heyday\nunions\nfought for the unemployed and underemployed, for
immigrant\nworkers and youth, against racism and home foreclosures.
What\ncan be\ndone to ignite such struggle today, forge real solidarity,
and beat\nthe bosses' barrage of union busting? \nCome\nhear speakers
involved in these worker struggles: \n\n\nGeorge\nFigueroa- Strike
Coordinator of the successful July BART\nstrike\nfor ATULocal 1555*, now
 being victimized by BART.\n\n \nClarence\nThomas- Co-Chair of the\nMillion
Worker March, Executive Board\nmember of ILWU 10*A\nMember ATU Local 192*
(AC Transit worker)\n\n\nYemane\nSeium, Frank Adams-\nOrganizers, Oakland
Port Truckers'\nAssociation*\n\nJack\nHeyman-\nChair of TWSC and an
 organizer\nof the 1984 longshore anti-apartheid ship boycott,\nthe May Day
2008 anti-war\nWest Coast port shutdown and the 2010 Bay Area ports protest
 for justice\nfor Oscar Grant\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n(*for\nidentification purposes
only) \n\n \nThis\nforum is organized by the Transport Workers Solidarity
 Comittee\n(www.transportworkers.org)\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
