DESCRIPTION:Trevor Timm, an activist with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, will
present a talk titled "Government Surveillance and Civil Liberties"\n\nAt
the EFF Timm specializes in surveillance, free speech, and government
transparency issues. He is also the co-founder and executive director of
the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which supports and funds independent
journalism organizations dedicated to transparency and accountability in
government. Before joining the EFF, Trevor helped the longtime General
Counsel of The New York Times, James Goodale, write a book on the First
Amendment. He has also worked for the former President of the ACLU and at
The New Yorker. He graduated from Northeastern University and has a J.D.
from New York Law School.\n\nEven in the 18th century, our founding fathers
knew that abuses occur when governments can search people without probable
cause. That is why the Bill of Rights states:\n"The right of the people to
be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants
shall issue, but upon probable cause..."\n\nNow in the 21st century,
electronic communication has given the government new opportunities to
search our electronic papers and the war on terror has provided the excuse
for government to assert power. The new abuses engender mistrust of
government and disrupt commerce.\n\nPlease register via phone, email or by
