DESCRIPTION:On Saturday, October 12th, ATA Gallery’s OTHER CINEMA presents MISSION
SCHOOL, a program, in conjunction with San Francisco Art Institute,
dedicated to the indigenous street-art movement of the Mission District,
and honoring the memory of Margaret Kilgallen. A portion of all proceeds
from the night will be donated to the Asha Kilgallen-McGee Fund.\n\nThe
feature doc, Josh and Ralph Ackerman’s Widely Unknown, is a
behind-the-scenes glimpse into the NYC “break-through” of the
now-famous Mission School. This hour-long doc chronicles that historic
Deitch Gallery exhibition. Composed of installation views, opening scenes,
and thoughtful interviews with Rigo, Barry (Twist) McGee, Chris Johanson,
Buz Blurr, and Alicia McCarthy, this seminal material, mostly shot by
Josh’s artist-father, Ralph (with help from Vanessa Renwick), took years
to finally gel, after Ralph’s own untimely death.\n\nBill Daniel appears
in person to ground our regional aesthetic, with cameos of other street
artists, including Swoon, Futura, Doze Green, and Ron English.\n
