DESCRIPTION:Urgent: "Fukushima is Here... Now What? A Town Hall Forum"\nScientists are
saying that Fukushima is here. What does this mean for us, and what can we
do about it?\nOctober 17, 7:00 pm; BFUU, 1924 Cedar St., @ Bonita, Berkeley
(2 blocks North and 3 blocks East of N. Berk. BART)\nPresented by BFUU
Social Justice Committee, Fukushima Response Network, Codepink Golden Gate,
No Nukes Action Committee\nSliding scale $5-$10 donation, no one turned
away; refreshments served; information, books, videos\nAre you wondering
what's going on with the nuclear power plant in Fukushima and whether the
effects of the Fukushima meltdown have reached California? What must we do
to contain the problem? What should we be asking our officials to do,
locally, nationally, internationally? Did you know about the campaign to
ask the UN to appoint an International INDEPENDENT Commission of Experts
(IICE) to handle the crisis? Do you know what to do to protect yourself
from radiation? Speakers and videos will provide information on the
situation and suggested actions. Come with your questions and concerns; you
will leave with practical actions to take re. this critical situation. With
John Bertucci, Fukushima Response Network Sonoma County; Professor Masaki
Shimoji, anti-nuclear activist, Osaka Japan; Dr. Carol Wolman, Nick Thabit
and Holly Harwood, Fukushima Response Network; Steve Zeltzer, KPFA,
LaborFest; Chizu Hamada; Brad Newsham, "Fukushima is Here" project; Vic
Sadot, "No Nuke Blues".\nLocal and state officials invited; additional
speakers TBA\n\n\n"We are now within two months of what may be
humankind’s most dangerous moment since the Cuban Missile Crisis. There
is no excuse for not acting. All the resources our species can muster must
be focused on the fuel pool at Fukushima Unit 4. Fukushima’s owner, Tokyo
Electric (Tepco), says that within as few as 60 days it may begin trying to
remove more than 1300 spent fuel rods from a badly damaged pool perched 100
feet in the air. The pool rests on a badly damaged building that is
tilting, sinking and could easily come down in the next earthquake, if not
on its own. Some 400 tons of fuel in that pool could spew out more than
15,000 times as much radiation as was released at Hiroshima. The one thing
certain about this crisis is that Tepco does not have the scientific,
engineering or financial resources to handle it. Nor does the Japanese
government. The situation demands a coordinated worldwide effort of the
best scientists and engineers our species can muster." Time for a Global
Takeover: The Crisis at Fukushima 4, by HARVEY WASSERMAN
