DESCRIPTION:Carbon Neutral Desal?\nMyths and Realities of Carbon Offsets\n\nAlthough
seawater desalination requires a tremendous amount of energy, proponents
claim the project will be "carbon neutral," resulting in no net increase in
greenhouse gas emissions. One option they suggest is the purchase of
certified greenhouse gas offsets. For example, they might pay others to
plant trees.\n\nLearn more about greenhouse gas offsets and how they work
in the real world. Join Barbara Haya, Ph.D, Stanford Environmental Law
Clinic and Kathleen McAfee, Ph.D, Associate Professor International
Relations, SFSU, for an informative evening.\n\nKathleen McAfee's research
focuses on "selling nature to save it", carbon-offset trading, payments for
ecosystem services, and other market-based and alternative approaches that
link climate change, conservation, agriculture and development. She
received a PhD in Geography from UC Berkeley after a career in
international development. She has been a consultant to UN agencies and
has ties with NGOs in different world regions.\n\nBarbara Haya's research
focuses on providing grounded analysis of the ways the incentives created
by carbon trading programs affect actual decisions within the particular
economic, political and cultural contexts in which these programs are being
 implemented.\n\n\n$10 donation requested\n
