DESCRIPTION:\nJAMES LOVELOCK: THE GENIUS OF GAIA\nwith Florence Windfall\n\nGaia
Science Day will be celebrated at Humanist Hall for the second time
Tuesday, July 30, with Florence’s presentation on James Lovelock, the
Genius of Gaia, followed by discussions. James Lovelock created the Gaia
Theory, the theory that the whole Earth system of life and its material
environment is self-regulating at a state comfortable for the organisms.
Join us to find out what the Gaia Theory is and how it came about!
\n\nFlorence derives the content of this post from Tim Radford, writing for
the Science Book Club of The Guardian. James Lovelock was one to ask
questions like: Over the more than 4 billion years of Earth’s history,
why hasn’t all the ocean water boiled off into space — the sun has
gotten 30% hotter since the Earth began over 4 billion years ago? How does
the Earth normally regulate its average global temperature over the course
of millions of years in the face of a warming sun? Why isn’t the sea far
more salty — rivers pour more and more salt into the sea every year?
Where does the nitrogen in the atmosphere come from, why is it there —
it’s also a necessary ingredient in all life forms? Why is the
proportion of oxygen in the atmosphere just within the safety zone for life
 — any more oxygen and wildfires would never stop, any less and organisms
would not have enough energy to function? James Lovelock makes the case
that life is an agent in its own survival. His Gaia Theory means that the
Earth we know as our home is a living planet. \n\nHumanist Hall is
wheelchair accessible around the corner at 411 28th Street\n\n$5
 donations are expected\n\n\n\n
